BarkBox: the hottest dog box or wet pet flop?

For those of you who haven’t heard about BarkBox, it’s a $25-ish / month box that sends your dog 5 items. Here’s our very quick rundown.

  • Very cute items, if you’re into kitschy. On the flip side, if you shop at the MoMA Design Store, you might not appreciate the ungainly crab plushie innards that will be littering your floor.

  • You’re paying mostly for the in-house design, as BarkBox doesn’t actually create or make the food themselves

  • BarkBox focuses on the unboxing experience with your dog(s), hence the artwork all over the cardboard

  • It’s convenient to have the non-necessities sent to you monthly. Similar to the way someone might send recurring roses to their significant other on Valentine’s day, a dog owner might want to send recurring gifts to their beloved hairy pet.

  • Which makes us wonder several things:

    • Designer dog toys would be amazing, but can you imagine how expensive that would be?

    • Is there a competitor subscription box for cats? Perhaps, dare we say it… MeowMail?
